My current project is an ongoing investigation that explores the possibility of representing aesthetic properties of ‘incongruous humor’ through the medium of painting and drawing. The properties in question are intangible qualities, perceptual and/or conceptual, inherent in or embodied within a thing or an event that voluntarily and/or involuntarily invite its participants to discover and to appreciate its absurdness. The question that I attempt to answer is this: Can these properties of incongruity be aesthetic? To this, I answer yes. This conviction poses a challenge for me and for painting and drawing as a medium: Can abstract properties such as incongruity be represented through a concrete medium such as painting and drawing? In this regard, this project is also an artistic investigation to realize the possibility of concretizing the abstract through painting and drawing. As such, my endeavor is successful only insofar as (1) humor, construed as incongruity, is expressed aesthetically, and (2) abstract properties are represented through concreteness of painting and drawing.
